How long do students study for?
Some students participate on programs that run during WSU’s Spring Break, or as long as a full academic year abroad at one of our incredible partner institutions. There are a range of programs that travel for 10 days to 1 month, so it is easy to fit a study abroad experience in while maintaining a job or internship.
How do I transfer credit from my study abroad experience if I’m going on a WSU Program?
If the program is WSU-Sponsored you won’t technically be transferring credit. Student participants on all WSU-Sponsored programs register for the related courses through Academica, and are billed at applicable standard tuition rates.
Can I earn credit towards my degree?
Yes, all WSU-Sponsored programs require you to register for courses as part of the program. Many short-term programs offer courses that are general education requirements for most majors. Many students plan to use a mix of required courses and elective credits when going abroad.
How much does it cost to study abroad?
While we don’t deny studying abroad is a costly investment in your educational future, it is very often times affordable and comparable to what you’d spend living at WSU for a semester. Programs typically range from $5,000-15,000.
Can I use financial aid to study abroad?
Yes, you may be eligible to receive federal financial aid funds for a study abroad program. To receive aid funding you must meet the enrollment requirements of the award.
However if you are approved for aid to attend non-WSU programs, you will be eligible to receive only Federal Direct Loans, the Federal Pell Grant and alternative private loans. Federal Perkins loans and WSU grants are not available to students studying abroad under consortium agreements. Additionally, alternative/private loans must be lender approved.
Do my WSU scholarships apply to studying abroad?
In most cases, yes, they would at least apply to the tuition portion of the program should you participate on a program during a semester (ie. fall/winter terms), when you typically receive funding. Before applying, it is always best to ask a program coordinator or financial aid officer how your scholarships may be applied towards the overall cost of a program.
